Welcome to the Edinburgh University Hoppers Website!
The Edinburgh University Hoppers is the name of the fun 'support group' (according to Edinburgh Uni) for Women in Informatics.
The group was named after Grace Hopper - a pioneer in Computer Science who invented the compiler.
With us are also the Scottish Hoppers and the Biannual Hopper Meets over in the U.S. - all of which celebrate women in Computing.
We're here because...
Over the past few years, there has been a concern expressed for the lack of women in Informatics.
Several members of the Informatics staff wanted some form of support for women within the school and as a result, we managed to get the student-hoppers@inf mailing list set up.
A similar list, staff-hoppers@inf is the list for female staff in Informatics.
At the moment we are setting up this website and running several events, such as workshops and socials to help get everyone together.
The main point is to create an environment
in which women feel supported and part of Informatics even though, statistically, there are only 10% of us.
Oh and for those interested, we do hair and nails too ;).

Inspirational Women in Computing

Are you an undergraduate or postgraduate student studying a computing related subject? Or a young professional working in IT?
The Edinburgh University Hoppers group is inviting you to an evening with inspirational women in computing on 15th October 2009!
There will be a number of speakers from P&G, Barclays and Google.
In addition, the evening will include with a panel session on "computing careers for women" - where you can ask our speakers their top tips for achieving career success!
As if that's not enough, there will also be a free buffet dinner, plus networking drinks kindly sponsored by Procter and Gamble, Barclays Capital and the School of Informatics.
Please join us for an evening of inspirational talks and engaging discussions to help you get the job that you want! Places are first come, first serve, so please register!
